What is a Companion Dog Show?

Companion dog shows are fun, relaxed dog shows licenced by The Kennel Club, so you know they will be well organised and your class will be judged by friendly, experienced judges. They are usually run by a dog-training club, and are open to the public to watch. It's a great way to start our showing a pedigree dog, or just to have some fun with your family pet.

Part of the licence agreement with The Kennel Club is that half the proceeds from entries at a companion dog show is donated to charity, so when you enter, you'll be benefitting a dog charity too - how good is that! That's why there is a small entry fee for each class you enter your dog in, which is in addition to the price of your Paws in the Park show entry ticket.

Which classes can I enter my dog in?

Paws in the Park Whats On Companion Dog Show 2There is a wide range of classes you can enter, from formal pedigree classes to the fun classes for any breed, including "Best Biscuit Catcher"! All the classes are listed in the Companion dog show schedule, so you can check out which classes you want to enter in advance, and have a practice!

Novelty Classes

Everyone loves the Novelty Classes, where your dog competes to be the “Dog with the Waggiest Tail”, or the “Best Rescue”, or the "Dog or Bitch the Judge would most like to take home". It's terrific fun to enter these classes, and with prizes to 6th place in every class, your doggy pal could go home with a rosette!
Please note that Paws in the Park Summer Fair only have Novelty Classes!

New for 2017 Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme, Bronze level.(Autumn Fair)

The Good Citizen Dog Scheme is now the largest dog training programme in the UK, It is open to all dogs and provides a good standard of training for dogs and owners, incorporating many domestic obedience exercises. Classes will be run throughout the day and if you pass you get the Kennel Club certificate which can be used toward some classes at Breed shows.

Pedigree & Cross Breed Classes

Enter your pedigree & cross breed for a chance to shine. Class winners go forward for their own Pedigree & Cross Breed Best in Show prize.

Pedigree Classes

Pedigree classes usually include Any Variety Puppy, Special Yearling, and Open Any Variety by group. Class winners then compete for Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show, plus Best Puppy in Show. (To make it fair for everyone, experienced show dogs that have already won a CC, RCC or JW are not eligible to enter.)

Handling Classes

There are Junior Handler classes for young people keen to show off their own showing skills, plus Adult Handler classes for those keen to develop their skills. Winners go forward for the Best Handler prize each day.

Classes for Companion Dog Club members

These are special classes just for members of The Kennel Club Companion Dog Club. (You can sign up for the Club online: http://www.thekennelclubshop.org.uk/)

You can enter as many classes as you like, but just remember that we have three rings at our Companion dog shows, so some classes will run concurrently.

Entries and Rules

You can enter your dog(s) on the day from 10am, with classes starting at 11am. Our Companion dog show is licenced by the Kennel Club, and this does mean that certain rules do apply, such as not dog entered must be younger than six months old. The rules are all listed in the downloadable PDF schedule, or you can call the organisers for more details (their phone number is on the schedule). An entry fee is charged for each class you enter.

Our Companion Dog Show is held under cover (Spring and Autumn Shows), so whatever the weather, your prize pedigrees or magnificent mutts won't even get their paws wet. There is plenty of room for cages and crates, and for the keen dog showing fan, camping is available for the weekend, with Saturday evening entertainment included.

Each Companion Dog Show is held as part of the Paws in the Park show. You must buy an entry ticket to the relevant Paws in the Park show in order to enter our Companion Dog Show.
